Municipal Solid Waste as a Marketable Resource
Municipal solid waste (MSW) is a rapidly growing market for the rail industry in general, but for the short line and regional railroad industry in particular. With the increase in the amount of garbage produced in the world, the increasing need for transportation of mass amounts of MSW from all areas has made it a viable market. The diversity of the short line industry - a large presence in rural areas, in particular - makes it the most effective shipper of MSW in large parts of North America.
